Obituary

Martin Zimmerman, 84, September 29, 2022. Marty grew up in the West Rodgers Park neighborhood of Chicago, in a Jewish middle class family, as the oldest of three siblings. Marty was a generous man, a dreamer and an achiever. His life was a pursuit and fulfillment of the aspirations he had at a young age. As a member of the Boy Scouts of America, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout and also became a member of the Order of the Arrow. He also took an early interest in radio technology and, as a junior in high school, took first-place honors in the Illinois State Science Fair as the co-inventor of a radio transmitter, which could also serve as a radio station. This led him to become the youngest person in the country to receive a license as an Advanced Class Amateur Radio Operator. As a result, he was able to join the Red Cross Radio Relay League. Marty was active on both his high school and college rifle teams, winning multiple state and regional championships. He also became a skilled archer. Marty was granted early admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study electrical engineering. His enrollment in the MIT ROTC program led to his commissioning as a US Army Officer upon his graduation in 1959. Marty then received early acceptance into the Columbia School of Business, as a McKinsey scholar. He earned a Master’s in Business Administration in 1961. During his time at Columbia University, he became Editor in Chief of the Columbia Business News. Upon completing formal education, Marty began his active duty in the US Army as an officer in the Ordnance Corps. He was trained at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, and then at Rock Island Arsenal, IL, and served as quality control and technical operations officer. He also became a military rifle instructor. He was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for design improvements for USAF bomber fire control systems. He achieved the rank of Captain prior to his return to civilian life. Marty then began a highly successful business career. As an entrepreneur, he built and established several startup companies, and grew two medical equipment-leasing companies, LINC and LINC Anthem to position them for a public stock offering. He was president and chief executive officer of LFC Capital, a private investment firm specializing in the healthcare industry. Earlier in his career, he was founder and president of Telco Marketing Services, Inc., which was a pioneer in the hospital equipment-leasing field. Through his career, Marty received multiple awards as first place or finalist for best entrepreneur of the year. Over the years, Marty was a member of the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School, a Board member of the Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago, a Trustee of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, a member of the Photography Committee of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a member of the Council for the Arts at MIT. Throughout his career, as through his life, Marty was able to pursue many other interests. He was an avid fly-fisherman, a skier, a skeet-shooter, an adventure lover, and a committed art collector. He built a major collection of architectural drawings, contemporary photography and Native art works. His passions led him to travel the world as well as to explore the American West, camping out on wilderness treks. Marty had a very full life and a rich personality. His talents, energy, curiosity and generosity inspired many. Marty is survived by his wife Danielle, their daughters Justine and Lauren, Marty’s older children Jacqueline and Adam, his brother Mike and his sister Alice Wechter (Tom).
